Features That Make Your Home Unique

Hello there! I think we can all agree that we want a home that is unique to us. This got me thinking, that to have a unique house doesn't mean that you necessarily have to do something dramatic like tearing walls down or repaint the exterior. While those things can be great, sometimes we aren't prepared for a giant project like that. So, I've gathered some suggestions for you on how to add small features to your home to make it unique and special! 

First, you could add a built in shelf as a room or space separator in your home. This particular design is modern and sleek, instantly upgrading the look of the rooms. It separates the two rooms just enough so that there is definition, but without closing the spaces off completely. Now the rooms are distinguished but light and airy with an open bookcase for added decoration and storage. This could be done in a master between the bed area and a sitting area, or between a foyer and a living room. This shelf was done by Woodmaster Custom Cabinets.

Cell phone charging stations are genius. This tiny built in can get so much use in a household. Most likely, every member of your family has a cell phone. With a charging station, all you need is an outlet and little shelves to hold the phones. Add one in your kitchen and/or living room since those are the two rooms we socialize in most. These are usually placed mid-way up the wall, so no more bending down to plug in your phone or your guests phone when you have company over. Now, you can stay connected in the most convenient spots in your home without the fear of a dying phone!

A butler’s pantry may seem a tad fancy, but really it is just extra storage between your kitchen and dining room for coffee and beverages. This particular one was also a Woodmaster Custom Cabinets project. We love the glass cabinets above because they will show off your best wine glasses and coffee mugs, and they just look sophisticated. Underneath, feel free to store the mismatch kitchenware that you don’t want guests to see! J This added area is a great spot to use when you are hosting a party, or just to pour a cup a joe in the morning!

Lastly, you could consider adding a barn door somewhere in your home. These are definitely trending right now so it's an instant upgrade that requires minimal installation. Choose any design and finish you like and pick an interesting metal track to slide it on. Put it somewhere creative, like in front of your pantry, laundry room, or even replace your bathroom door for a barn door that locks! This is one of our favorite additions. Add Trim & Molding To Your Remodel

Hey guys! Are you considering remodeling your house or even just touching up an old room? If so, DON’T skip out on adding trim and molding! I've put together some tips and photos by Woodmaster Woodworks to help you get ideas. When remodeling, it is important to add these elements to the space because many older homes do not have enough trim, or any at all. By adding trim, molding, baseboards, wainscoting, or a trey ceiling to a room, it comes to life. (and into this century!)

Everyone deserves to have that WOW factor in their home, and the photos here definitely have it. A room can go from looking like a dingy box, to a very elegant room with the right amount of detail and trim. Adding something like baseboards may not seem like a very drastic change, but once it’s there, you will wonder why you didn’t add it earlier.

Remodeling a house or even a room is tons of work! We don’t want you to forget to add some of the essentials that will truly transform the look. Play With Color!

At Woodmaster Woodworks, we love color! Sure, all- white cabinets are in right now, but here’s an idea if that’s not your style. A new take on the plain white cabinets is an off-white color with a black or brown glaze. The glaze gives your cabinets a sense of dimension and darkens the color a little. We can accommodate any color you want done.

You can do any combination of paint and glaze! For example, blue kitchen cabinets are trending right now so you could add a black glaze on that, or a black cabinet with a white glaze. The option of a glaze allows for more variety in color and design.

If you don’t think a glaze will give you the look you need, we can still give you an unconventional look through paint. Navy, seafoam green, gray, light powder blue, etc. are all gorgeous cabinet colors! If the idea of colored cabinets scares you, start with a small space such as a half bathroom or laundry room to get a feel for it. Why should we stick with the traditional browns, blacks, and whites when we can do a fun color?

Another trendy use of color at the moment is to do two-toned kitchen cabinets! Whether you do different colored uppers and lowers, or just a different colored island, we think this style does so much for a space. It’s good to break up the space and add a focal point or contrast.

Choosing an eccentric paint color can do wonders. Get creative and don’t be afraid to do something out of the ordinary anywhere in your home or kitchen! After all, the kitchen is the most used room in the house, so it should definitely be eye-catching! 

FUNctional Storage

Not enough room for everything? We know the feeling. Take a look at these inspirational, FUNctional storage ideas that we've come across for every home!

 This small cabinet has a drawer that stores Fido's food and water - close it when you need the extra space! You can also use the other drawers for storing extra food, treats, toys, & leashes! 

Can you smell Fluffy's litter box from the front door? Or are you always getting the litter stuck to your feet? Fix both problems with this discreet cabinet. With a small door for Fluffy and a larger door for cleaning out the litter box, it contains everything in one place and can double for a side table. I definitely need this one!

 Kitchens are the most used room in the house. I'm pretty certain that everything in my house ends up in the kitchen at some point. Organize your kitchen with these great cabinet modifications. Are you utilizing all of your space in the pantry? With these additional pantry pull-outs, you can double your pantry storage! 

Speaking of using dead space in your kitchen cabinet - check out this 3 tiered Lazy Susan! Corners will no longer be wasted space! 

Check out this jewel. Instead of wasting floor space with trash cans/recycling cans (which can leave the room smelling like last night's pizza), add a trash can pull-out to your cabinet! Voila! Cleaner looking & cleaner smelling room!

Speaking of pull-outs, look what someone added to their bedroom! Pull out hampers are becoming increasingly popular. Keep your room neat and tidy by separating your whites from colors in this double hamper pull-out.








Too many toys? Add some storage space to your child's room with this under-bed storage. Small compartments can give you more options for organizing toys, clothes, sheets, etc. Where was this when I was a kid?

This is photo shows the built-ins next to the mantel shelf that we designed, built & installed for one of our customers. If you notice, the doors on the built-in are see through - that's because they are actually crates for the dogs! We are in love - how about you?

I'm in love with this closet! This was a custom closet design for a customer in Wake Forest. I'm pretty sure I could live in there!

Mudrooms & Mudbenches

There are so many features that you can add to your homes these days. Take a look at my personal favorite - mudbenches! Some people opt for an entire mudroom in their home, but if you don't have that much space, a great alternative is a mudbench.

They're usually placed in your entry way or in a nook close to the door. These little gems are great for families or homes with roommates. You can store all of your items that you need when you go out - hats, coats, backpacks, keys, shoes, etc.

 

Some even have mirrors for last looks before running out the door, or cork-boards to remember events or grocery lists. 

Running a household is never easy, and keeping it clean is even harder. That's why I love the ease of mudbenches - it's the first thing you see when you come home, and the last you see when you leave. So everything is in one place, and stored neatly out of the way.

You can customize mudbenches to meet the style and needs of your home. So add a charging station for your phones, laptops and tablets, put a dog/cat bed underneath for your pets to play, or paint it with each person's name on their space.

Innovative Built-In Ideas

We know everyone has seen built-in bookcases, entertainment centers and mudrooms. So here is a series of innovative built-ins that we thought were very creative and useful. These tend to leave you thinking...

"Why didn't I think of that?!"

 Why just have recessed panels when you can use them to hide your books! This is just like in the movies when people reveal the hidden rooms by pulling a book, only you reveal the book by pulling the wall! This is great because it hides the clutter, and you can double the use for the space by hanging photos or dry-erase boards on the panels!

 This picture has been circling the internet for some time now, but no matter how many times we see it, I think I can speak for everyone when I say - I WANT THIS IN MY HOUSE! What a great use of space!

 

I love this one! If there isn't enough room for a cabinet, or cabinets aren't going with your style in a small bathroom, try recessed cabinets! It's great because the room is there behind the sink (thanks to plumbing) and it adds more space to your room! Plus, those nosey friends and family members will struggle to find what you're "hiding".

 Ok, I need this one. How great would it be to climb into the bathtub and have everything you need at your fingertips, and get out without leaving a mess? I don't like clutter in the corners, and with this design, you can hide all the shampoo and body wash bottles when you're done. Easy-peasy.

My laundry room is tiny and very difficult to organize. This is a terrific idea! Utilizing the doors, this person added built-ins on the doors and a shelf above the washer and dryer to come up with the most space-saving and ingenious design that is practical for any house!

I want this in my house! Save space by installing this cutting board inside one of your cabinets - now you can pull it out when you need it, and store it when you don't. Or, just use it for added counter space when you're busy in the kitchen!

Here's another ingenious idea for a staircase. No more wasted space under the stairs. This guy actually has a movable island that he uses as a wet bar. This would also be a great idea for a craft island - pull it out when you're working, and slide it away when you're done!
